On the surface, one might think my saint is
\nthe least likely candidate for sainthood.
\nHe’s not a happy person.
\nHe doesn’t like people and
\nnot many people like him.
\nHe’s grumpy, he’s angry, he’s mad at
\nthe world, I’m sure full of regrets.
\nHe drinks too much, he smokes,
\nhe gambles, curses, lies and cheats.
\nAnd he spends a lot of time
\nwith the Lady of the Night.
\nThat’s what you see at first glance.
\nIf you dig deeper you see
\na man beyond his faults.
\nMr. Vincent McKenna was born in 1946
\nin Sheepshead Bay the son of
\nfirst generation Irish immigrants.
\nGrowing up poor on the streets of Brooklyn,
\nVincent learned all the things
\nthat kids shouldn’t need to know:
\nFighting, cursing and gambling.
\nIn 1965, as a member of the
\nUnited States Army 5th Regiment,
\nVincent was among the four hundred and
\nfifty soldiers dropped into La Drang Valley
\nand immediately ambushed
\nby 2000 enemy troops.
\nThere he heroically saved the lives of two
\nwounded officers pinned down by enemy fire.
\nAnd carried them to safety.
\nHas was awarded the bronze
\nstar for his bravery.
\nI imagine the best way to tell
\nyou who Mr. Vincent McKenna is
\nis to tell you what
\nhe’s done for me.
\nWhen me and my mom first moved here,
\nwe knew no one.
\nAnd Mr. McKenna took me in.
\nWhen he didn’t have to,
\nand most likely, didn’t want to…
\nbut he did it anyhow, ’cause THAT’S what saints do.
\nWe visited his wife, Sandy,
\nof 40 years, who recently passed away.
\nVin’s done her laundry EVERY week for the past
\nBecause saints never give up.
\nHe taught me how to fight, how to stand my
\nground and be brave, how to speak up and be bold.
\nBecause saints fight for themselves and
\nothers, so that they might be heard.
\nHe taught me how to gamble,
\nhorse racing, Keno,
\nthe Over and Under, which is a big reason
\nwhy I’m grounded ’til I’m eighteen.
\nBut in that I learned how to
\ntake risks and go for broke.
\nBecause in life the odds
\ncan be stacked against you.
\nThis is Vin’s cat, Felix, who eats
\ngourmet cat food while Vin eats sardines.
\n‘Cause saints make sacrifices.
\nYes, Mr. Vincent McKenna is flawed,
\nseriously flawed,
\nBut just like the all the
\nother saints we studied,
\nbecause, after all, saints
\nare human beings… very human beings.
\nCourage, sacrifice,
\ncompassion, humanity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
