迪伦除了被当作诗集出版的歌词合集之外，唯一的一本文字出版物。算是自传吧，迪伦回忆和反思了成名前后疯狂的激荡岁月。之后的音乐生涯中，做的一切尝试都是要撕去那些年被贴上的标签。当时知道他没去领诺贝尔奖，很多人说他又在装逼。一个人装了一次逼，叫装逼，装了一辈子，那么他就是有反叛精神的人。

在奥斯卡眼里，成年人的世界太愚蠢，他暗中决定不再长高，永远保持儿童的样貌。可是所有人都不知道他的超凡智力，还都把他当成不懂事的小孩。所以他在这个世界里，既在场又缺席，可以特别安全地观察所有人，知道他们的秘密。通过这个巧妙的设定，用一种很新奇的视角来表现小市民阶层的愚蠢和龌龊，以及那个时代的荒唐。时代印记明显。
